As Knox County’s local food system grows in size and reputation, new opportunities emerge for broader marketing throughout central Ohio. A 2009 study, “Planting the Seeds of Sustainable Development: Knox County’s Local Food System,” noted that “Knox County is well positioned within the regional market to develop a quality brand and identity that may enhance demand and value of Knox County farm and food products.”
To realize this potential, a student intern is working with a market analyst to establish a web site featuring Knox County local goods. This multifaceted site will feature a GIS-based listing of local producers, along with extensive information on each farm. To provide a more holistic approach to the county’s agriculture, the site will include a history of local farming and information about its many agricultural organizations. Consumers will benefit from information on the seasonality of local farm products and recipes geared to locally available food items. Eventually, the site will serve as a vehicle for on-line ordering by individual and institutional consumers.
