The Knox Local Food Council established the Market on the Square in 2003 as one of its initial projects to establish a countywide local food system. Located in Mount Vernon’s Public Square, the market currently boasts over fifty local farm vendors and is widely considered one of the best farm markets in Ohio. In addition to providing fresh, local food to area consumers, the market has been a key component of the historic downtown’s revitalization.

To enhance and expand market activity, a student intern is working with a county extension officer to develop a variety of programs for consumers including educational presentations at the market, monthly field walks at growers’ farms, and special programs for local community groups. The Kenyon student is also creating a survey to measure consumer satisfaction and arranging for surplus products to go to local food banks. These efforts enhance the market’s sustainability and broaden its community impact.
